PANJIM: Condemning the State government’s decision to impose entry tax on Goan commercial vehicles, the Congress party on Tuesday demanded an immediate scrap of this tax. The opposition also urged the government to reconsider its decision on entry-tax to non-Goan commercial vehicles, transporting essential goods to Goa.
The check-posts on Monday saw much chaos and were blocked over imposition of entry tax on Goa-registered vehicles, forcing Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar to intervene and keep the matter in abeyance.
Addressing the media Tuesday afternoon, Congress spokesperson Sunil Kawthankar said, “We demand that the government immediately scrap the entry tax on Goan commercial vehicles. The decision was taken without taking the ministers and opposition into confidence,” he said.
Pointing to the chief minister’s statement that he was unaware about the decision, Kawthankar questioned as to how such an important financial decision can be taken without informing the state Finance Minister (Parsekar). “The decision involves financial implications and hence requires financial clearance,” he said.
