PANJIM: While fire incidents at garbage dumps are keeping the fire fighters on their toes, another fire, this time, at a scrap yard in Merces early Saturday morning kept the personnel busy. With three fire tenders at the spot on the Merces-Ribandar road, the personnel took over two hours and used around 32,000 litres of water to douse the flames.
An official said that they received a call at around 5.49 am about the fire at the scrap yard near Hoble Ice Plant after which the teams rushed to the spot. Sources said that the loss is estimated at around 15,000 while timely action by the fire personnel saved materials worth Rs 2 lakh approx.
The fire personnel have been seen tackling fire at the infamous Sonsoddo garbage dumps even as the authorities managed to cover the smoking mound with mud, more than three fire incidents at Taleigao garbage dump has also been reported this year.
