Scrapyard, another structure demolished in port town

VASCO: Two structures including a scrapyard situated along the highway at Shantinagar, Vasco were demolished by the South Western Railways (SWR) authorities to make way for construction of an additional railway overbridge at Shantinagar-New Vaddem road intersection, on Wednesday.

The demolition was carried out in the presence of Mormugao Municipal Council chairperson Girish Borker, ward councillor Shradha Mahale, municipal staff and other officials.

Mormugao chairperson Girish Borker said that it was a long pending demand of the residents to construct an additional overbridge and it will now be fulfilled. He said that though there is an overbridge connecting the four-lane highway from Shantinagar to New Vaddem area but the road on the overbridge was narrow. He said that the residents and motorists had been demanding to widen the overbridge due to frequent traffic snarls mostly during peak hours.

Finally a proposal was put up to the Railways requesting them to construct an additional railway overbridge parallel to the existing overbridge and both the bridges could be used as one-away. The Comunidade had already handed over land for the overbridge project, he added.

Mahale said that the additional railway overbridge was the need of the hour as residents of Shantinagar and New Vaddem locals were facing hardships and the bridge being narrow two vehicles could not pass.
