Se Old Goa VP wants govt to provide alternative site for vendors

The vendors have to be shifted temporarily before events related to G20 Summit begin in the State

PANJIM: Se Old Goa village Panchayat following its meeting of the elected members on Wednesday decided to write to the government requesting it to provide suitable land to shift vendors, who are currently operating along the compound wall of Basilica of Bom Jesus church at Old Goa.

Sarpanch Sandra Piedade Gonsalves said that the Panchayat is currently looking for an alternate place where some of the vendors can be shifted temporarily before the G20 Summit related events begin in the state.

“For permanent solution, we will pursue with the government for land where we can shift the vendors. The vendors are Goans and their livelihood is totally dependent on these street carts and we can’t ask them to vacate overnight. On humanitarian grounds we have allowed them so far but they will be shifted to a designated place away from the church premises,” Gonsalves said.

She further said that moving cart operators, particularly those selling ice cream, have been asked not to conduct business at the entry and exit points of the church complex.
