MARGAO: The Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) convened its Annual General Body Meeting (AGM) at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, to address critical concerns pertaining to seafarers’ welfare and future plans. Chaired by Frank Viegas, the president of GSAI, the meeting saw active participation from the association’s members.
Viegas advocated for the appointment of individuals with seafaring backgrounds as Masters/Chief Engineers in government departments related to shipping operations. Stressing the invaluable expertise they bring, Viegas emphasized that their practical experience could enhance decision-making and policy formulation, ultimately improving working conditions for seafarers.
Highlighting a significant development, it was revealed that the State Government has instituted a body of three members to scrutinise the forms related to the Seafarer Welfare Pension Scheme. The GSAI President is one of the appointed members overseeing this crucial process.
Looking ahead to Seafarers Day on June 25, the association unveiled plans to release a commemorative souvenir and honour Goan seafarers currently serving as chefs/chief cooks.
A Constituency-wise Awareness and Interaction Programme for seafarers was also announced, aiming to provide crucial information, raise awareness about available schemes, and address concerns. Expressing gratitude, the members resolved to send a letter of appreciation to the Indian Navy Marine Commandos for their swift action during a recent piracy attack in the Somalia region, ensuring the safe rescue of the crew on the ship Lila Norfolk.
The AGM concluded with the approval of activities planned for 2024-2025, encompassing workshops, training programmes, career guidance sessions, medical camps, drives, and social gatherings, all aimed at promoting the welfare of seafarers. Earlier, GSAI Secretary Joseph Fernandes presented the minutes of the previous meeting, which were confirmed by the attending members. Treasurer Santan Pereira then delivered the audited financial report, which was duly reviewed and accepted by the members present.
