MARGAO: Goa Seamen Association of India (GSAI) along with cruise ship employees met South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar in BJP office and handed over to him the memorandum to be handed over to Union Shipping Ministry.
“The memorandum consisted of all the documents related to the deduction of $ 10 from all Indian crew that will be deposited in the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) welfare fund which is a wrong practice that is even admitted by NUSI general secretary Abdul Ghani,” said GSAI President Dixon Vaz.
“We also discussed about meeting the Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari on the ex-gratia issue,” added Vaz.
Sawaikar informed the seafarers that he received information from the shipping minister’s office that a meeting would take place soon. GSAI members also stressed about the need to start a seafarers cell in Goa soon since in the last two years lot of young seafarers below the age of 40 have died on ships and no inquiry or compensation is given to the family, according to a statement issued by GSAI on Tuesday.
