MARGAO: The seamen have threatened to mobilise protests all over India, if the demands and grievances of the retired and serving seafarers are not addressed.
The threat was issued at the first meeting of the All India Retired Seamen Association and Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FUSI).
Xavier Costa spoke at the meeting on behalf of Goan seafarers – both serving and retired.
It was informed at the meeting that the Director General of Shipping has planned to hold a meeting of FUSI, government authorities and other stake holders of the shipping industry to discuss the feasibility of the seamen’s demands.
“This is the first victory and if the talk is not favourable we will revive our agitation. In the coming days,” said Naresh Biwadkar, the chief coordinator of the conference.
The aim of the conference was to bring together all the associations of the retired seafarers from different parts of India on a single platform, to fight against the injustice done to them by various shipping companies.
Representatives and delegates from eight costal states attended the conference.
