Seamen urged not to panic over Kolkota IT ruling

PANJIM: Goa Seamen Association of India (GSAI) has said that it has taken up the issue of bringing the seafarers under income tax assessment with the Shipping Ministry through South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar.

Fear and anxiety prevailed amongst the seafarers of Goa and all around the country after the Income Tax Tribunal in Kolkota ruled in favour of assessing seafarers for income tax followed by mass notices to the seamen in the country.
GSAI President Dixon Vaz, in a press release, has said that the IT department has already issued notice to the shipping companies, however, the government would challenge the order of the tribunal, and that the government has not imposed income tax on seafarers.
“We are working very closely with the Shipping Ministry and will put a strong case so that this is not implemented ,” Vaz said.
