PONDA: Pointing out that the tenure of Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) ends on May 2018, Ponda citizens have sent a memorandum to the State Election Commission (SEC) and Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) to prepare for elections at least three months in advance by updating the voters list, reserving the wards, proper delimitations etc, besides giving ample time to those keen on contesting elections.
Former PMC deputy chairman Mahadev Khanolkar spoke about bad experiences in the last Council election, when elections were conducted hurriedly, without proper preparation that benefitted certain councillors and politicians.
He said that he did not approach the court against the SEC as it would prove to be an obstacle in the smooth conduct of elections then. “That is why this time we have requested the SEC and DMA to prepare for the election three months in advance and in case the election, reservation and delimitation are declared at the last moment we will not hesitate to approach the Court,” he said.
He said that many voters from Borim, Curti and Bethora have been listed in PMC electoral roll, as well as their villages and this duplication needed to be corrected, as only those residing within the municipal area should be allowed to vote.
