CURCHOREM: An ox was rescued from a well situated in the railway yard at Khamamoll, Curchorem, on Sunday.

This is the second such incident in the last eleven days and the animal was rescued by the personnel from Curchorem Fire and Emergency Services (CFES).
The ox was grazing closed to the well when it accidentally slipped and fell inside and started drowning. Alert locals immediately informed the fire services, whose personnel rushed to the site and rescued the ox using ropes. Local youth also assisted the firemen.
The rescue team comprised of leading fire fighter Shivaji Phadke, fire fighters Rupesh Gavli, Sagar Charim, Bikhil Naik and Chandra Mohan.
A similar incident had occurred on April 8. After this, the Curchorem fire station sub-officer informed Herald that he had requested the railway authorities to seal the unused wells in the railway yard. They were sunk during the peak mining activities in the yard to sprinkle water in the wagons while unloading the iron ore to arrest flying of dust.
“Some time back we rescued similar cattle from another well in the yard. Today it is an animal, next it could be anyone. Therefore the authority concerned must take steps to prevent similar occurrences,” he said.
When asked what steps they have taken to prevent repetition of such incidents, railways authorities informed that they have already taken the cognizance of the incident and that they would cover both the wells by Monday (April 20).
Meanwhile, the fire personnel doused the dry grass fire near the government college, Quepem and saved the PWD godown from catching fire, on Sunday.
According to fire officials, they reached the spot on time and succeeded in controlling the fire which would otherwise have spread to the nearby PWD godown used for stocking pipes and their other accessories.
“The cause of fire could not be ascertained,” said the sub-officer Surendra Naik.
Meanwhile, the fire personal also put out dry grass fire near the Ravindra Bhavan Hall, Curchorem.
