Section 144 imposed around Goa Meat Complex ahead of Eid-al-Adha

MARGAO: Ahead of the Qurbani festival, South Goa District Magistrate Asvin Chandru has issued an order under Section 144 of the CrPC. This order prohibits the gathering of four or more persons within the periphery of the Goa Meat Complex compound wall and within a one-kilometre radius from the compound wall of the modernised abattoir in Usgao-Ponda. The order will be in effect from midnight on June 16 until midnight on June 19, covering a period of four days.

To maintain law and order during this period, the District Collector has appointed three officers as Executive Magistrates. Their role will be to oversee the transportation of animals and meat into Goa.

The decision to impose Section 144 stems from previous incidents where gatherings took place near the Goa Meat Complex in Usgao, accompanied by the display of anti-slaughter banners. The District Magistrate has expressed concern that such situations may cause societal tension and disrupt communal peace and tranquillity.

As per tradition, the All Goa Muslim Jamats Association will transport animals from other States through the Mollem gate in Dharbandora taluka and the Pollem gate in Canacona taluka. These animals will be taken to the modernised abattoir in Usgao during the Eid festival.
