Section 144 Imposed in Bengaluru Ahead of Karnataka Bandh Over Cauvery Water Dispute

Goa: Bengaluru Police have enforced Section 144 in the city until Saturday at 12 am, in anticipation of the Karnataka Bandh called by over 2,000 pro-Kannada groups. The protest is in objection to the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. The restriction began at 12 am on Friday, as announced by Police Commissioner B Dayanand.

The ‘Kannada Okkuta,’ an amalgamation of Kannada organizations, has cautioned the state government against measures aimed at curbing the protest. As part of the bandh scheduled from 6 am to 6 pm on Friday, a protest procession will take place from Town Hall to Freedom Park in Bengaluru.

Simultaneously, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah declared on Wednesday that the directive from the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee to Karnataka, to release water to Tamil Nadu from Thursday to October 15, will be challenged in the Supreme Court.

On the same day, metro services will be temporarily suspended between Mysore Road and Kengeri stations, which are part of the newly constructed extension from Kengeri to Challaghatta, a section of Namma Metro’s Purple Line. However, train services will continue between Baiyyappanahalli and Mysore Road, Whitefield and K R Puram stations, as well as along the entire Green Line.

In a disappointing turn of events for fans, South African comedian Trevor Noah cancelled his show in Bengaluru on Wednesday, citing “technical issues.” He extended apologies to those who had planned to attend the show and assured them of refunds. The cancellation came amidst massive traffic jams in Bengaluru, adding to the frustration of people who had spent hours commuting.
