MARGAO, FEB 9
While the Urban Development Minister, Joaquim Alemao turned sympathetic to the plight of a farmer in Cuncolim, there’s bad news for agitating farmers of Navelim opposing acquisition of fields opposite the Margao Railway Station.
Joaquim’s elder brother and PWD Minister, Churchill Alemao on Wednesday issued directions to the District Collector, South G P Naik to secure the fields admeasuring 6000 square metres at Rawanfond by construction a compound wall for the rehabilitation of the displaced traders from the Rawanfond traffic junction.
Alemao told newsmen after his meeting with Revenue Minister, Jose Philip D’Souza in the South Goa District Collectorate that the paddy fields in question admeasuring 30,000 square metres were acquired by the government when he was not the MLA of Navelim constituency. “They were lush green fields and were acquired when Luizinho Faleiro was the Navelim MLA. I had even offered each of the affected farmers land admeasuring 50 square metres, but now they have erected a Cross on the acquired land after being misguided by the former MLA”, Alemao said adding that the government after Cabinet approval has allotted 50 square metres each to the traders displaced by the widening of the Rawanfond traffic junction.
Asserting that the government would not tolerate any zabardasti on the acquired land, he appealed to the farmers not to get misguided by vested interests.
