PANJIM: Cautioning the youth seeking jobs abroad of the dangers of human trafficking, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday cited an example of how two Goan youth were duped by a recruiting agent.
Sawant said the matter came to light only after eight job seekers approached his office last week complaining that they were cheated by an agent.
He said that these youth had paid money ranging from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs five lakh to the agent, who started refusing them job offers on one pretext or the other.
The Chief Minister said two youth, who were sent abroad by the recruitment agent, went through several hardships and were ill-treated while one was even put behind bars there. After the job seekers narrated the ordeal of the two youths abroad, the Chief Minister said he asked DGP to look into the matter and the recruitment agent was arrested.
Appealing to Goan youth not to fall prey to such scams as it could be for human trafficking, the Chief Minister asked the police and other stakeholders not to wait till complaint gets filed in such matters but maintain a vigil on advertisements by such recruiting agents, etc, and take steps proactively. The police should be proactive in such cases and should not wait to take action until someone files a complaint, he said.
