MARGAO: Saying that the Portuguese citizenship issue is a tricky matter, San Andre MLA Vishnu Surya Wagh on Saturday said that the government should work out a solution to the tangle keeping in mind the interests of Goans.
He did not subscribe to the stand of MGP leader Sudhin Dhavlikar that persons holding dual citizenship should be deported and their properties confiscated.
Speaking to Herald on the sidelines of the release of a book at the Ravindra Bhavan here on Saturday, Wagh agreed that thousands of voters from his constituency will be wiped out from the electoral rolls if the government does not work out a solution to the issue. “Not just thousands of voters, but there will be hardly any voters in Goa Velha and Agassaim,” he said.
He replied in the negative when asked whether he subscribed to the stand of the MGP leader that the government should confiscate the properties of all those holding dual citizenship. “I honestly feel that Goans should be equated on par with people from other parts of the country vis-à-vis the citizenship. Goa was still under the Portuguese when India attained Independence. A passport was required to travel to Goa from India and vice versa when the state was under the Portuguese regime,” Wagh said.
