The segregated waste collection from households will commence shortly in Margao revealed Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudessai Angle today in the presence of Chief Officer Y B Tawade. As the Council failed to get segregated waste from households, the MMC has now decided to sub-let the waste collection to a private party.
To get segregated waste from households is one of the reasons why the waste collection is sought to be privatised. The party that bags the contract will have to ensure that every household gives segregated waste so that the wet waste can be directly sent for composting and the dry waste can be further segregated to be disposed off.
MMC’s sanitary section had originally asked for 250 labourers but have to currently work with only 96 labourers who are paid Rs 325 per day for the job that earns them no respect due to which their enthusiasm is low.
Two parties had bid for the contract of door-to-door garbage collection and the first pre-bid meeting was scheduled to be held on January 12, 2017, which was however, postponed as the code of conduct came in force and the meeting could not be held.
Subsequently the meeting was scheduled for March 27, 2017 but could not be held as the Chief Officer was not present and the next meeting scheduled on April 7, 2017 also did not take place as the Chief Officer was not present once again.
However, on April 7, 2017 the Municipal Engineer volunteered to chair the meeting but was not allowed to do so as there was nothing in writing authorising him to do so.
The meeting finally took place a few days ago and both the Chairperson and Chief Officer assured that that the technical bid and the financial bid will be checked shortly and the tender will then be awarded to the deserving party following which the private party will commence segregated waste collection from each and every household in Margao.
