PANJIM: The Goa State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) has decided to grant Environment Clearance (EC) for the construction of 35,000-seater international cricket stadium at Dhargal in Pernem taluka.

The decision comes following recommendation from the State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC) last month.

The SEIAA during its meeting on October 5 decided to recommend the project for EC with a condition that the project proponent- Goa Cricket Association (GCA)should adhere to the commitment of keeping not less than 10,000 sq mts area as a virgin land and to fence the same to protect it.

In January 2018, the State Cabinet had accorded its nod to the lease land admeasuring 1,89,930 sq mts owned by the Goa government at Dhargal, Pernem to GCA at Rs 19 crore with the initial lease period of 33 years, extendable for two terms of 33 years each.

Accordingly, in September 2018, the government handed over the lease agreements to GCA, which has been granted 10 years to complete the project.

As announced earlier, the stadium will be equipped to play all three formats of cricket — Test, One-Day and T20 international matches.

It will also have provision for cricket academy.
