Selaulim evacuees defer agitation after assurance from Dy Collector

Says grievances will be resolved by WRD Dept

SANGUEM: After threats by a group of Selaulim evacuees led by Adv Anand Gaonkar threatened to agitate at the felicitation of the farmers organised by the Water Resources Department at Selaulim Dam Sanguem, the Deputy Collector Sanguem Milind Velip summoned the aggrieved group for discussion and assured them of possible solution to their grievances.

During the meeting, Adv Gaonkar briefed the Deputy Collector of the long pending demands of the Selaulim evacuees who had sacrificed their ancestral land for the construction of the Selaulim dam but have been kept waiting for over 43 long years for grant of the promised land of 400 sq mtr for housing and 10000 sq mtr for agricultural purpose.

Gaonkar pointed out that over 73 families who are put into missing families list, have been time and over again knocking the doors of the successive governments for the allocation of the promised lands but to no avail.

Considering the prevailing situation and given the negligence attitude of the government in resolving the long pending demands of the Selaulim Evacuees, a group of affected families had threatened to wave black flags to the ministers attending the felicitation function at the Selaulim Dam.

At the meeting held on Tuesday, Deputy Collector Sanguem, Milind Velip assured the aggrieved persons that their grievances would be taken up with the WRD officials and their grievances would be resolved.

Following the assurance by the Deputy Collector, the affected persons with due advice from Adv Gaonkar called off their agitation as of now. After the meeting Gaonkar informed that it is at the request and assurance given by the Deputy Collector that they are withdrawing the agitation, but they will hit the streets if the government fails to solve their grievances in the near future.
