MAPUSA: On the occasion of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Goa Tourism Development Corporation Ltd (GTDC) as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan allotted two self-propelled vacuum sweeping machines for Calangute Constituency.
Calangute MLA and Waste Management Minister Michael Lobo launched the sweeping machines, recently, which will be supervised and maintained by Calangute Panchayat. The cost of the both the machines is approximately Rs 1.60 crore.
The Calangute MLA and village panchayat thanked the GTDC Chairman Dayanand Sopte, who was present at the function for facilitating the cleaning vehicles under GTDC.
Speaking at the function, the local MLA stressed on the need for maintaining cleanliness in the coastal belt as it is frequented by the tourists.
“These sweeping machines will be used in Calangute and Candolim. When tourists come to Goa they should get nice clean roads, portable drinking water and toilets as well as other facilities. In order to get good infrastructure there is a need for people to shell out little money. We cannot get revenue from the mining industry. Presently, tourism is the only industry generating money in the State. On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, I would like to tell the people there is a need to imbibe the slogan Swachta Hi Seva in our minds,” said Lobo.
Sarpanch of Calangute Panchayat Shawn Martins said, “We are very grateful that these vehicles have been provided to us to maintain cleanliness in Calangute and surrounding areas.”
