Wockhardt donates to El Shaddai
PANJIM: NUSI-Wockhardt Hospital, Goa planned a three-day ‘Healthy Heart’ campaign wherein heart shaped mascots visited key places in North and South Goa. The mascots were accompanied by a banner and people were asked to stick a heart shaped sticker on the banner. Each sticker pasted on the banner denoted Re 1 and the amount collected was donated to El Shaddai Charitable Trust. The Mascot continued to remain at the hospital for a week after World Heart Day with an aim to create awareness and encourage people to donate to the under privileged children of El Shaddai Charitable Trust. Children of El Shaddai Charitable Trust on were invited to the hospital for a get-together with the staff of the hospital followed by lunch. The hospital later handed over the proceeds of its World Heart Day ‘Healthy Heart’ Mascot campaign to Stanley Thomas of El Shaddai Charitable Trust.
Governor to open Kerala cultural event
PANJIM: The Goa Kerala cultural Association, Vasco, will stage a cultural programme “Goa-Kerala SargaSangamotsav” on October 11, from 6 pm onwards at Ravindra Bhavan, Baina, Vasco. Governor Mridula Sinha will inaugurate the function. Minister for Environment and Forest Alina Sandanha, DGP T N Mohan IPS, and Lt Cdr (Retd) Anil B Nair, managing editor, Goa Malayali News, will also attend the function. Earlier in the day, ‘Pookalam contest’ (flower rangoli) will be organised for the secondary schools, between 3 pm and 5 pm, at the Art Gallery of Ravindra Bhavan. Entry to the competition will be closed on October 10, noon.
Majorda panchayat felicitates elderly
PANJIM: Majorda-Utorda-Calata Panchayat felicitated prominent senior citizens at a recently organised function. The felicitated persons are Dr Mariano Godinho, Aleixo Manuel D’Silva (ex-sarpanch), Pascoal Rebello (tiatrist), Inacio Piedade Fernandes (sportsman). Nuvem MLA Mickky Pacheco and South Goa Zilla Panchayat Chairperson Nelly Rodrigues felicitated the senior citizens with shawls, mementos and certificates.
Medical conference in city
PANJIM: An annual conference of Indian Society of Malaria and other communicable diseases and Indian Association of Epidemiologists will be held in Panjim, from October 10 to 12. The conference will be attended by many senior officials, scientists, doctors and entrepreneurs from across the globe. The conference theme is ‘Reverse the challenge: Vector borne, emerging infectious and non communicable diseases.’ The main disease on the focus would be Malaria, Ebola, Dengue, Japanese
Encephalities, Tuberculosis, HIV, Diabetes, Coronary Artery disease, Dementia, etc.
Tech-fest at Padre Conceicao College
PANJIM; Padre Conceicao College of Engineering, Verna, organized Techyon 2.0 — a two-day state level tech-fest, recently. Some of the events featured in this competition included Robowars, Hackathon (building of software or applications), hardwired (circuit building), technical project presentation, technical quiz and code crunch. The ‘Team Pacers Racing’ Go Kart, developed by the Mechanical Engineering students was also displayed. Chief guest Victor Silveira, senior manager at Siemens, inaugurated the event in the presence of Principal Dr Luis C Mesquita and the heads of depts.
Heavy rains lash State
PANJIM: Heavy rains accompanied by thunder and lightning lashed parts of Goa on Wednesday morning due to a deep depression over Andamans, the Met department said Wednesday.
The depression moved over north Andamans toward north Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coast and will continue surging forward during the next 96 hours, as per IMD website. The state is likely to receive more rain according to the movement of the depression, and it could even intensify into a cyclonic storm. After a shortfall in rain, the State received normal rainfall this year with the seasonal total recorded during the period measured at 3057.2 mm (120.36 inches).
Two die in separate road mishaps
PONDA: Two persons died while a woman escaped with minor injuries in separate road accidents at Borim and Marcela in Ponda taluka. In the first incident, Subash Prasad of Devulwada-Khandola was knocked down by an unidentified vehicle in Marcela at 9.30 pm on Tuesday. Prasad died on the spot, while the vehicle driver fled from the site. In another accident between a bus and scooter at Borim Bridge circle at Khazorda-Borim at about 10 am, a 59-year-old scooterist from Maina-Curtorim died. The scooterist was returning home from Ponda along with his wife when his scooter was hit by an oncoming bus.
WB native falls off roof, dies
CURCHOREM: A 43-year-old native of West Bengal died after he fell off the roof of a house under construction at Periudok-Sanvordem on Wednesday.
According to Curchorem police, Asim Pal, residing at Cacora-Curchorem, accidentally fell from the top of the house while work was on to put a slab. He was rushed to the Primary Health Centre at Curchorem, where doctors declared him dead on admission. The body was sent for post mortem at Hospicio in Margao.
Valpoi local held for minor’s rape
PERNEM: A resident of Valpoi has been accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl. According to Pernem police, the accused had forceful sexual intercourse with the victim girl from December 2013 after promising to marry her, resulting in her pregnancy. Police registered the case against the accused under Section 376 of IPC, Section 8(2) of Goa Children’s Act and Section 4 of POSCO Act.
Man held with stolen motorcycle
PONDA: Ponda police arrested a man from Margao for allegedly trying to sell a stolen motorcycle at Ponda. According to Ponda police, Reagan Cardoz was arrested on charges of selling the stolen motorcycle. Police also seized two other motorcycles (GA-02-H-7284) and (GA-02-K-8659).
