Senior Cong leaders divided on change in party guard

MARGAO: Confusion continued amongst Congress Party workers as many were not in favour of a change in the party leadership at present, as elections are fast approaching, and are likely to be held in February 2022.

However, senior Congress leaders were of the opinion that this is the right time to appoint a new party president in the State.

Party vice president Sankalp Amonkar clarified that he never made a statement about splitting the party, if there is a change in the party leadership. Sankalp said he is a committed worker of the party.

Amonkar said his intention was to express the emotions and feelings of the young workers of the party who have been in the forefront in raising various issues concerning the people of Goa.

“The youth want that the Congress Party must come to power and form the government in 2022,” he said.

He also said he met AICC Goa in charge Dinesh Gundu Rao and clarified the issue with him on Thursday, and told him that he was wrongly quoted by the media.

“I have also promised him that I will do my best to ensure that Congress wins the trust of the people and continue with my agitations and protests to expose the misdeeds of the BJP government,” he further said.

Expressing the views on the issue of change in leadership, a senior Congress leader speaking on condition of anonymity said that this is the right time to appoint a new State president.

“Girish has resigned twice and now it is difficult to understand why he is showing interest again. According to my opinion at this time, the State president should be from the minority community,” he said.

Janardhan Bhandari, vice president of State Congress Committee, said that this is not the right time to appoint a new president.

“Still if the high command decides to appoint a new president we have no problem and will surely work under the new leadership,” he said.

Bhandari said that the party high command should change the leadership after the State Assembly elections.

Abhijeet Desai, convenor of Congress Goa Pradesh Kissan Committee said he was with the party and said a change in leadership at this point will create problems for the party.

“Yes Girish Chodankar has failed twice, and he has resigned taking moral responsibilities too. Actually, the high command should have replaced him with a new president at the time when he had submitted his resignation. If the Congress leaders really wanted the change in leadership, why did they wait for the last one year?” he questioned.
