CALANGUTE: Barely days after joining the Congress, Calangute Panchayat de facto leader Joseph Sequeira lost no time in accusing the BJP-led State government for carrying out haphazard or incomplete development in Calangute.
Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has, however, refuted Sequeira’s allegations and claimed that the government has changed the face of Calangute with its developmental projects, but admitted that a few projects are incomplete.
“When Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar approached us to support the present BJP MLA Michael Lobo, we accepted it on the condition of development of Calangute. Parrikar agreed to carry out development of Calangute as per our requirements and needs,” said Sequeira.
“However, the development mantra was just on paper and nothing has happened in reality. Though foundation stones were laid while starting few projects and later inaugurated, many projects have remained incomplete.”
“The Calangute Beach Promenade project, road widening from Calangute Association to Khobra Vaddo, Calangute, Baga beautification project, Calangute market bus bay project, road-widening project from St Alex Church (Calangute) to Saligao junction, the sewerage project, electrical underground cabling works and the market complex, besides other works are all pending,” he said.
Refuting Sequeira’s claims, Lobo said the government has literally changed the face of Calangute with major projects like Calangute Beach Promenade, sewerage treatment plant, Baga beautification, etc.
“The road-widening works from Calangute Association to Khobra Vaddo was objected to by the locals but it is being carried out by GSIDC by taking everyone into confidence. The beautification of Baga and the road-widening works from St Alex Church (Calangute) to Saligao junction is underway,” said Lobo.
“The sewerage treatment plant and electrical underground cabling works are underway and the government is all for development of Calangute village. All projects will be completed at the earliest possible time,” added Lobo.
