MARGAO: Tired of illegal dumping of garbage in open areas the, Seraulim Panchayat and the people have taken matters in their hand and track down the people dumping garbage in the open.
There have been several complaints that the garbage dumped on road sides has been making its way to the fields and water bodies completely polluting them. The road sides of Seraulim too are defaced due to the problem. The panchayat and people together have decided to take up the matter and nab the culprits who have been dumping garbage here and fine them heftily.
Seraulim Sarpanch Domingos Fernandes said, “Most of the garbage which can be seen scattered in Seraulim is from beyond the village. Now we have asked the Science and Technology Department appointed contractor to come and pick the garbage. The garbage of Seraulim never makes to road sides as the contract is given to a contractor to pick the garbage.”
Panch Leslie Dourado said, “Margao hoteliers and other people dump the garbage here which is spoiling the name and image of the village. We have taken an initiative to remove the garbage and the sarpanch has been requested to ask the Science and Technology department to help it to get it cleaned. This garbage is from hotels and houses and it won’t be tolerated anymore. We have decided to fine the persons caught dumping to the tune of Rs 5,000.”
“It has been told that the people who dump garbage here in the open generally do it in the night. To solve this problem, we will be having night vigils and catch the culprits. The nature of garbage which is dumped here clearly shows that this garbage comes from hotels,” said Agnelo D’Silva, another panch.
He further informed that they have urged the people and Seraulim villagers to wait for the door to door collection and not to dump garbage here. “We warn the outsiders not to dump here and dispose their garbage on their own,” Agnelo said.
