Navelim youth crushed under loaded truck

MARGAO: In a tragic accident, a 19-year-old youth, Sahad Ismail, resident of Mohhidin Towers, Ratwaddo-Navelim, lost his life on Tuesday when he was crushed under the rear wheel of a truck at four-road junction, Navelim.
Margao PI Sudesh Naik stated that the accident occurred at 3.15 pm when the loaded truck driven by Venkatesh Chalwadi, 20, hailing from Bagalkot-Karnataka and residing at Sanvordem, was on its way from Cuncolim to Sinquetim.
As the truck was turning at the four-road junction to head to Sinquetim, the vehicle is suspected to have knocked down the deceased Ismail who was riding a two-wheeler in the same direction. The youth came under the rear wheels of the truck and was crushed to death instantly. Sahad was a first-year student of Rosary College Navelim.
The truck driver was arrested for rash and negligent driving offence under section 279 and 304 IPC.
What resulted after the accident and the youth’s tragic death was utter commotion with the agitated public blocking the road for vehicular traffic.
Navelim MLA and Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado, who rushed to the spot, said he had mooted a road-widening project to ease congestion on the highway, but added that the project could not start for want of NOC from one or two parties.
“The project is on hold for want of NOCs. Road widening would have helped to ease traffic congestion on the road”, he said.
The body of the deceased has been preserved in a morgue and PSI Girendra Naik is probing the incident.
