PERNEM: Several parts of Pernem taluka especially the villages surrounding Mopa Airport and along the National Highway 66 continued to witness flood-like situation on Tuesday.

Major flooding was witnessed at the Mopa Airport where the area was submerged under water. The runway was inundated while several vehicles operating at the airport also broke down with water entering into engines.

Seeing the flood-like situation at the Mopa Airport, the villagers residing in the villages surrounding the airport expressed fear that the accumulated water will be released down the plateau resulting in water entering into the villages.

It may be recalled that on Monday, Amere and Nigal parts of Warkhand village had witnessed massive flooding after the river passing through the village was overflowing further disrupting normal life. The level and flow of water was such as that it damaged the cultivated crops and fruit bearing plantations in the village. The water also entered into four houses further causing major inconvenience to these families.

The villagers from the surrounding villages said that this is an impact of airport development work where they have to witness flooding due to unplanned construction by the government.

They now fear that the airport authorities will release the water towards the village direction and similar to the last year, the villagers especially the farmers, will have to bear the losses due to their crop damage thereby affecting their livelihood.

Meanwhile, rain water also entered into few houses and shops located along the National Highway 66, at Dhargal, as there is no proper drainage system for the water to flow.
