MARGAO: The Margao Municipality which moves with alacrity to issue notices to households in respect of overflowing septic tanks and soak pits was caught on the wrong foot on Friday.
A sewage chamber of the municipal building has been found overflowing in the passage on the building rear side right under the nose of the civic babus and city fathers for the last few days, raising a stink behind the building. Sadly, though the sewage was visible and caused nuisance to the pedestrians, the civic body was found wanting in capping the chamber over the last few days.
It is still unclear whether the sewage chamber is connected to the septic tank or the storm water drain as doubts were raised in the corridors of the civic body over the presence of any septic tank or soak pit for the Municipal building.
When Herald contacted the municipal sanitary section to throw light on the nuisance and health hazard posed to the citizens by the overflowing sewage chamber, an official said the civic body is aware of the situation, but added that repair work would be carried out during the weekend. “Since the sewage chamber started overflowing during the working days, we could not take up the repair work during the last five days. We now intend to carry out the work either tonight or during the weekend,” informed an official.
The sorry state of affairs, however, triggered outrage amongst the citizens, with questions being raised on the delay in capping the chamber by a body which is primary responsible to ensure the sanitation of the city.
