MARGAO: Colva residents cried foul over the discharge of sewage on the beach on Tuesday.
They have demanded immediate action against the erring hotel and stop to the nuisance and health hazard on the beach.
The incident came to light on Tuesday when the security guard engaged by the Colva panchayat was intimated of the nuisance caused to the visitors and local residents alike by the foul odour. “I immediately contacted Colva Civic and Consumer Forum secretary Judith Almeida since it was a serious matter,” Juze said.
Inspection of the area revealed that the waste water was being released right on the beach by the erring hotel establishment.
Judith said the time has come for the government to crack a whip against erring hotels discharging waste in an open place like a beach.
She disclosed plans to bring the sorry state of affairs to the notice of the Environment Minister, Alina Saldanha, besides petitioning the Goa State Pollution Control Board and the health department.
“This is a serious issue which needs to be dealt sternly. You think tourists will return back to Colva if such a situation is allowed to continue,” Judith demanded while demanding action.
Tuesday afternoon saw teams of the Goa State Pollution Control Board and the Health department descending at the beach for an inspection.
An official in the know said the health department can initiate action against the erring hotel under the Public Health Act.
