MARGAO: Mismanagement of waste water outlets by restaurants has resulted in sewage overflowing on the roads from the chambers at two places in Margao and surprisingly the Margao Municipal Council is not even aware of the problem right next to its own property.
For over a week now, sewerage chambers near the district police headquarters and near the famous Lohia Maidan have been overflowing. But no action has been taken to correct the problem. Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudessai, however, said she would direct the sanitary inspectors to check the problems.
“The problem at the police station is due to the restaurants and a caterer operating in Damodar Building as this problem had cropped up last year and we had to clean the whole drain that was clogged with grease and other waste food items,” she said.
Besides, she said the network there is quite complicated as it has too many turns and twists and it also goes deep underground with concrete slabs over it making it difficult to maintain the drains.
She opined that at Lohia Maidan it must be the same problem as there are two restaurants there namely La Marina and Venite Garden.
Dr Babita also admitted to staff shortage and pointed out that Sanitary Inspector Viraj who is well versed with these drains is currently looking after the garbage management at Sonsoddo and cannot look at these matters.
