Sewerage chambers overflowing in Madel area of Fatorda

MARGAO: The sewerage chambers of Madel in Fatorda have been overflowing since the last two days with sewage flowing along the roads in front of residential buildings. Locals say that the PWD has turned a blind eye to this health hazard.
Every year, the chambers in Madel overflow but this would happen only during monsoons when rainwater would enter the sewerage pipes. This time, however, it has occurred during the dry season where there is no abnormal increase in the quantity of sewage flowing through the pipes and chambers.
Locals complain that the people, especially children, are facing problems because they have to step in the sewage water while walking on the road. They claim that they have complained to the health department but no action is taken.
“The sewerage pipelines are around four years old. The only possible explanation is that the pipes are choked. But the PWD has not taken any action”, said Milagris Fernandes, a local of Madel. Milagris expressed concern of the local community which is preparing for Christmas celebration. “People are worried because during this time relatives come to visit and stay for the holidays. If they see all this filth in our ward, it is a shame for the people of Madel. After 6 pm, there are a lot of mosquitoes entering peoples houses. We have to close our doors and windows at as early as five in the evening. If anything happens such as malaria or dengue, who will be held responsible. There have already been cases of dengue just 4 months back. Is this sewerage a gift of Christmas for the people of Madel? ”, he questioned.
The residents of Madel have demanded that before Christmas, the authorities should act and resolve the problem in order to stop the flow of sewage along the road otherwise they will hold a peaceful protest along the road.
