SGPDA Building’s Unsanitary Conditions Spark Public Outcry and Health Concerns

The The South Goa Planning and Development Authority  building, housing crucial government offices including the Road Transport Office, SGPDA, Commercial Taxes office, and Registrar of Coop Societies, has garnered attention for its distressing sanitation issues, marking it as one of the most unclean sites in town.

The severity of the problem is evident outside the chicken shop at SGPDA and within the F wing of the Osia Commercial Arcade at the SGPDA market, where sewage overflows, contaminating the surroundings. This standing wastewater has transformed into a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects, posing significant health risks to the vicinity.

Inside the SGPDA building, reports reveal a grim picture of unsanitary conditions. The floors are consistently dirty, strewn with litter, including beer bottles, tin cans, and assorted scrap materials.

A concerned local resident expressed distress over the sewage-related issues, stating, “The sewage comes up instead of flowing away through the drains. There are restaurants and eateries here, creating a health hazard. Most government offices are located in this area, and the pervasive garbage creates an environment where people are forced to walk through this stench. I request the government and the Margao Municipality to urgently address this matter. Action should be initiated against the Chief Officer and Health Officer for neglecting the issue.”

The local resident also highlighted the counterproductive nature of the biomedical plants in the vicinity, citing constant maintenance issues rather than contributing to a resolution.

Adding to the grievances, the retail fish market drains are reportedly flooded and overflowing, posing additional challenges. “The sewage water overflows at the retail fish market, and people also slip and fall there,” the concerned local resident emphasized. The escalating sanitation crisis in the SGPDA area underscores the pressing need for immediate intervention by relevant authorities to safeguard public health and maintain a hygienic environment.
