MARGAO: It may take three more months to shift the wholesale fish market operated by the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) to an alternate location, in order for the GSIDC to complete its revamp of the market area.
A tentative location has been already finalised, but there are other procedures to be completed, besides building and implementing all the necessary facilities at the temporary location, said Krishna ‘Daji’ Salkar, Chairman, SGPDA. He told Herald that SGPDA after a joint inspection reviewed the unused hockey ground near the Fatorda Indoor Stadium, and it was considered a major breakthrough in the hunt for an alternate site for shifting the wholesale fish market on a temporary basis.
“We have started the process with the concerned authorities such as GSIDC and the Fisheries Department. On the other hand, there is a requirement to spend some money on providing all the required facilities at the alternative venue,” said Salkar.
He is of the opinion that the area finalised to shift the market to, is sufficient to host the facilities for the temporary wholesale fish market and also provides space for parking.
SGPDA and other concerned authorities are also stressing clearances from the District Collector, besides using chemicals to remove any foul odour that may emanate from the temporary market. It is pertinent to note that the GSIDC had requested the SGPDA to hand over the entire area of the present wholesale fish market to them, so that the ongoing construction works of the market are completed at the earliest.
