MARGAO: Shack owners from South Goa have taken a proactive stance to avoid any issues with sewage management in their next tourist season and have hired a Chennai-based company to handle the job. A demonstration was held in Benaulim to showcase the proposed works, which were inspected by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), with the board’s report expected to be submitted soon.

The initiative was undertaken by the shack owners to prepare for the upcoming season and avoid issues faced by shacks in Calangute and other areas. Cruz Cardozo, the President of Goa Shack Owners Welfare Society (GSOWS), said, “We are now waiting to see what the Pollution Control Board has to say, and if we get clearance, we shall go ahead with this work.”

However, the shack owners face an uncertain future as the existing shack policy of the Tourism Department is set to expire soon, and the government has announced plans for a new policy for the upcoming season. While the shack owners had criticized the Tourism Department for not providing them with infrastructure facilities such as sewage management, they also presented a list of demands regarding the department’s proposed new Shack Policy.
