Shack policy will be notified within a week: Govt in HC

AG says Tourism Dept will facilitate the allocation of temporary beach shacks for the current year; court disposes of a writ petition by shack operators

PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Tuesday disposed of a writ petition filed by three shack operators including Vidhyadhar Dabholkar after the Advocate General Devidas Pangam assured the Court that the Goa State Shack Policy 2023-26 will be notified within a week.

Advocate General Pangam informed the High Court after notifying the much awaited modified Shack Policy within a week, the Department of Tourism will facilitate the allocation of temporary beach shacks for the current touristic year.

Disappointed over the delay in demarcation of areas and allotment of shacks even as the tourism season had already commenced in the State, three shack operators had approached the Court. They urged the Court to direct the Department of Tourism to start the process of allotting shacks by issuing provisional licences one month before the start of the touristic season, by referring to the government’s tourism policy.

Following joint inspection and assessment conducted with the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) has granted permission to erect 359 beach shacks i.e. 254 in beach stretches of North Goa and 105 in South Goa district.
