Shacks want permission to place dining tables on beach

MARGAO: Against the backdrop of the Tourism Department and State police taking action against shack operators, shack owners have asked the government to allow them to place dining tables and chairs in the area around their shacks, that has been demarcated for beach beds

They further pointed out that it is the tourists who want to eat on the beach, and that this practice of placing tables outside their shacks has been going on for years now.

It may be recalled that the Tourism Department took action against those who have been placing temporary structures beyond the specific areas earmarked for each shack. In a letter sent to the Tourism Department, the Shack Owners Welfare Society (SOWS), reiterated that they have always been placing tables and chairs out in the open in the evenings, after removing their deck beds and beach umbrellas.

Each shack owner is allotted space for ten deck beds.  SOWS asked the government to allow its members to use the space on which they place deck beds and beach umbrellas, for chairs and tables in the evening.

There have been calls by shack owners over the last three months for the government to address various grievances, be it over the huge fees they have been asked to pay or the difficulties they face in running and setting up their shacks.
