MARGAO: Shadow Council along with local residents confronted the MMC over the poorly maintained transfer stations, which are converted into waste dumping points.
A waste collection truck was blocked and the workers were asked to call their superiors at the transfer station. Viraj Arabekar along with the supervisors later came and discussed ways and means to tackle the problem.
The fact that one can see waste being disposed by public at the transfer stations is a clear proof that the door-to-door collection system is not working well.
“While the MMC is quick enough to state that outside waste is being dumped at transfer stations on the periphery of the city, which is agreed to some extent, but how does the MMC justify similar situations at transfer stations in the internal parts of the city?” asked SCM.
The Shadow Council and local residents of Sirvodem volunteered to assist the council in monitoring the transfer stations if required. A local resident Pio Pereira even offered to install CCTV cameras at his expenses if the MMC assures to take action against those involved in dumping waste at the transfer station at Sirvodem.
