PANJIM: The heavy showers on Monday left not only the State inundated but also the iconic Kala Academy building, which has constantly been in the eye of the storm.
The inside portions of Kala Academy were inundated as water leaked through the floor. The soundproof flooring in the control room soaked all the water. It was evidence that no measures were taken to tackle the monsoon as. The labourers were also seen mopping the floor to clear the water.
Also uprooting of trees in the Kala Academy complex was reported.
When asked to comment about the leakage and flooding, Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude brushed aside the query and snapped, saying there was no leakage.
The Kala Rakhonn Mandd, an organisation of eminent artistes had recently demanded a white paper on the repair carried out in the Kala Academy complex with all its updates. They had also staged a protest in front of the Kala Academy building at Campal last week. They had also performed traditional ‘Garane’.
In July last year, the roof of the open-air auditorium of Kala Academy had collapsed, which the government later stated that the collapse was due to corrosion attack over the last 43 years resulting in the sudden collapse of structural steel members/RCC slab.
The Kala Academy complex was established in 1970 and the structure was designed by renowned architect late Charles Correa. The Kala Academy which was closed for repairs for three years was opened in November last year.
