Shantinagar murder accused and gun supplier arrested

MARGAO: The Margao Town Police have arrested Faiyaz Khatib alias Chotu (36) and Akbar Shaikh for Shantinagar bar murder. Chotu was arrested at Betim in Porvorim.

Chotu was arrested after the Control Room received a call that the accused will be at is in-laws’ residence at Betim. 
Police have also recovered a country made 7.65 calibre gun used for murdering the victim and five live cartridges. 
Chotu is a mechanic who shot the victim mason, while Shaikh is a barber who supplied the gun to the former. Both the accused are running shops in Navelim. 
On interrogation, police learnt that after shooting the victim, Chotu handed over the country made gun and his SIM card to Akbar Shaikh.
The police said that they would register a case of abetment under Indian Penal Code and unlawful possession of a firearm under Arms Act against Akbar Shaikh.
Shaikh disclosed to police that he is a native of Dapodi in Pune from where he had brought the gun for sale and the same was in possession of Khatib for over a month.
Meanwhile, Margao Town PI Chetan Patil said, “The motive of the murder is still not established as the accused still maintains that it was accidental. However, it is subject to investigation.” And on the origin of the gun, he said that he would only comment on the same after investigating the case thoroughly.
The incident occurred when five persons, including the victim Abdul Kadar (47) and the accused, were having drinks sitting at the same table. The victim and the accused reportedly had got into a brief exchange of words due to which Khatib shot the victim.
