MARGAO: The police and local authorities seem to have not taken cognisance of last week’s Areal blast after investigations revealed that the deceased/accused was putting up in the slums and shanties in and around Margao.
While shanties have resurfaced in the open space near the KTC bus stand, the concerned authorities – be it the police, Margao municipality et al – have all preferred to turn a blind eye to the presence of migrants in the locality.
In fact, residents of Fatorda have been up in arms over the presence of migrants near the Margao KTC bus stand. They pointed out that though the migrants have been an eyesore for the city, no action has been forthcoming from the authorities against the menace.
An Old Market resident, Vitorino Tavares reminded the danger and risk posed by the people putting up in the shanties near the bus stand. “No one knows what the occupants are doing, their place of origin and their presence in the city. It is indeed sad that both police and Margao Municipality have done nothing to verify the antecedents of these migrants, especially in the light of the Areal bomb blast when the deceased/accused was found staying in the slums of Margao”, Tavares said.
Apart from the shanties, the delegation pointed out the menace of garbage and litter in and around the shanties, giving a bad look for the area.
Earlier this year, a delegation of residents from the Old Market area had submitted a memorandum to both Margao police and MMC to crack a whip against the illegal hutments, but in vain.
The residents have now threatened to take a morcha to the Margao Municipal Council if no action is forthcoming from the authorities.
