BICHOLIM: Sending a stern message to the State government, Mayem Bhoovimochan Nagrik Kruti Samiti on Sunday asked MLA Anant Shet to immediately resign from the post of deputy speaker to mount pressure on the government to resolve the Mayem custodian issue.
A special public meeting was convened at Mayem to mobilise the people where leaders of several organisations were present.
“If the MLA is unable to keep his promise, then he should resign immediately and support the Samiti,” stated Samiti President Sakharam Pednekar at the meeting attended by about 500 villagers.
“It is high time as even the deputy speaker has already got notice from the custodian,” added Pednekar.
Speaking on the occasion, freedom fighter Nagesh Karmali, calling this as the last fight for Mayem’s freedom, asked the people to take strong stand against the government.
“If the government fails to solve the issue by December 19, then the people should not follow any rules and also disallow the person, who calls himself as the owner of the land, to enter into the village. Law is for the people and government should directly handover the land to the people,” stated Karmali.
Prof Subhash Velingkar said the people are supreme and government is not the ultimate authority. “This is not the question of just of one village, but the State as well as the nation. It’s shameful that we are still not free from the bondage of the Portuguese rule,” said Velingkar and added that “pressure should be mounted on the government so that it is forced to take action in the matter.”
Samiti President Kashinath Mayekar said till December 19, people from Mayem along with several other organisations would carry out hunger strike at Panjim. He warned the government not to test their patience and solve the issue before the situation goes out of control.
Freedom fighters Chandrakant Pednekar and Prabhakar Sinari, Bharat Swabhiman Bicholim President Kamlesh Bandekar, Mayem sarpanch and panchas were among others present for the meeting.
