Shigmo parade cancelled in Vasco, Cuncolim

VASCO/CUNCOLIM: Vasco Shigmotsav committee decided not to have Shigmotsav float parade on March 18, 2020 after State government declared COVID19 as an epidemic disease in Goa.

President of Cuncolim Shigmotsav Committee and Chief Officer of Cuncolim Municipal Council Violet Gomes told media the Shigmo Parade, scheduled on March 18, is cancelled due to fear outbreak of Corona.

Members of the Vasco Shigmotsav committee welcomes the decision but also opined that government should give some compensation to the 

Shigmotsav float makers.

On Monday morning during the meeting of Vasco Shigmotsav committee chaired by the Chief officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar, it was decided to cancel the Shigmotsav float parade in the city following fear of COVID-19.

Speaking to the reporters, MMC Chief Officer, who headed the Vasco Shigmotsav Committee, said that during their committee meeting, “It was decided to cancel the float parade as the State government has declared COVID19 as epidemic and this decision has been taken to avoid any risk of outbreak of Coronavirus infection.”

Member of the committee and councillor Deepak Naik opined that the decision to cancel Shigmo float is in favour of people’s safety. He also appreciated the decision of Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant for declaring COVID19 as epidemic disease looking at the spread of this infection.

Another member, Shekhar Khadapkar, opined that this year’s Shigmotsav committee formation itself started with the controversy by appointment of two presidents. Then there was a code of conduct and now due to Coronavirus infection, the float parade had to be cancelled which was supposed to take place on March 18, 2020.

He further said that the decision to cancel the float parade is might be in favour of the people but I feel those who have invested their money, efforts and time in making beautiful floats for this Shigmotsav, government should consider giving them some compensation.

Meanwhile President of Cuncolim Shigmotsav Committee and Chief Officer of Cuncolim Municipal Council Violet Gomes told media that Shigmo Parade, scheduled on March 18, is cancelled due to fear of Coronavirus.

Press note issued by Gomes said that all those concerned   Romtamel group, Floats, Folk Dance groups and general public should take note of the same.

On Saturday evening Goa Government had issued advisory with regards to epidemic outbreak of Corona. Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant had appealed Shigmotsav Committees to take decision whether to hold floats parade or not. Canacona Shigmotsav Committee had also cancelled Shigmo parade. Govt was also criticised by political parties and some citizens for not cancelling the parades.

Meanwhile one Romtamel group told Herald that they had spend more than 60 days practising for the parade and said all their efforts had gone in vain.
