BICHOLIM: Mounting resentment from residents of Shirgao, who are unhappy over plans to provide water to Poira villagers from a tank constructed at Shirgao, has forced the Mayem BJP Block Mandal to blame the PWD for the controversy.
The issue was raised in the gram sabha at Shirgao on Sunday and residents were upset that the local panchayat and comunidade were not taken into confidence, before planning to divert water from the Shirgao water tank to Poira village. Accusing politicians of aggravating the problem, instead of attempting to resolve the problems of Shirgao, the Shirgao gram sabha unanimously resolved to oppose any move to divert Shirgao water to Poira village.
While threatening to stage a protest rally, Shirgao Sarpanch Babuso Gaonkar informed the villagers that the water tank was constructed in 2005-06 due to the leadership of Shirgao Nagarik Kruti Samiti to permanently solve the water problem of Shirgao village.
Meanwhile, the Mayem BJP Mandal has tried to shift the blame on to the PWD. Addressing a news conference at the MLA’s office on Monday evening, BJP Shankar Chodankar said the proposal was carried forward only after a remark from the PWD technical section.
“The technical section had remarked that water tank at Shirgao had ample water and diversion of water to Poira would not affect Shirgao village,”said Chodankar.
