PONDA: The Shiroda Panchayat has acquired about 3,000 square metres of land belonging to the Shiroda Comundidade to set up garbage treatment plant in the village.

The Panchayat also plans to acquire additional 3,000 sq mtrs of land for the purpose.

According to information, the panchayat has already obtained approvals from the concerned departments to set up garbage treatment plant and work is expected to start once the project is finalised.

“We have already acquired the land and we need another 3,000 sq mtrs. We will utilise the golden jubilee funds of Rs 10 lakh to set up the plant. All the necessary permissions have been obtained from the concerned department and the process is on to decide on the type of garbage plant to be installed,” Shiroda Sarpanch Sandesh Prabhudessai told Herald.

“The panchayat some time back had visited a garbage treatment site in North Goa. We want a similar plant that will be environment friendly and that will treat garbage with ease,” added Prabhudessai.

The panchayat has also started house-to-house garbage collection drive and according to the sarpanch there is no issue over garbage disposal so far.

“There is house-to-house garbage collection especially in areas where there are buildings. Though there is no segregation of waste, we plan to achieve hundred per cent segregation of waste at source. We have appointed a contractor to look after the disposal and collection of waste,” he informed.
