MARGAO: PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar, on Friday, inspected the under-construction 20 MLD sewage treatment plant in Shirvodem and informed that it will be commissioned by June. The JICA plant of 7.5 MLD will be completed by March and both plants will be enough to treat the sewage of Margao, Navelim, Fatorda and some parts of Curtorim.
“The plant work is in the final stage. The civil work will be completed by February and the mechanical work will then follow. This mechanical work will take one month, and then the electrical work will be completed,” said Dhavalikar.
He continued, “The replacement of the old sewage pipelines of around 10 kilometres in Margao will be tendered in two weeks and is worth Rs 26 crore. We have set a deadline of December for completing the replacement work.”
Land of over 3.5 lakh square metres, which was acquired in the past regime, is being denotified and the PWD Chief Engineer informed that it may soon be done.
The new plants are being constructed under the C-Tech technology and are reportedly odour-free. As soon as the new plants are ready, the old plant will be taken up for modification and converted into the C-Tech format. The new plants have been designed to handle waste for 25 years. The processed water from these plants can be used for anything other than drinking.
However, the technology promises that the water is as pure as bottled water.
Dhavalikar added that the JICA plant work, which started years back, hadn’t been completed, and the former regime had to be questioned about the same.
