Shocked BJP summons South Goa leaders for an emergency meeting

PANJIM: The BJP went into a huddle at its Panjim headquarters office here, after it failed to wrest the South Goa Parliamentary constituency.

The BJP leaders called an emergency meeting where MLAs Digambar Kamat and Nilesh Cabral, and former Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant ‘Babu’ Kavlekar were present. The party leaders were upset since their resounding victory in North Goa constituency was completely dwarfed by BJP’s loss in South Goa.

The leaders held long discussions with the three MLAs to find out what exactly went wrong in the election. After trooping out from the party office, Kamat said, “What can you do when people decide? You can’t do anything. In a democracy, the people’s opinion is supreme and you have to respect it.”

“My assessment was that we worked hard. We made an assessment, and based on that I was saying that she will poll maximum votes. It was the people’s mandate and there was silent voting,” he said.

The Margao MLA denied that there was resentment among the voters because he switched from Congress to BJP in September 2022.
