Shocked woman dies as neighbour demolishes her hut

MARGAO: In what may be called a blatant case of human rights violation, a tin-hut belonging to a senior citizen in Pedda was demolished by her neighbour.

This shock led to the death of the aged woman. The woman was living in a small tin-house in Kharebandh and according to others in the vicinty; the woman’s hut was demolished by her next-door neighbour.
Shakina Shaikh a senior citizen who was in her 70s was living in the tin-house in Pedda at Khareband in an open space. The land owner had allowed her to stay there. Shakina used to sell combs and bangles and other cosmetic items. Her next door neighbour had been threatening her for some time.
On Sunday, they (the neighbour), brought a rickshaw and began pulling down the hut and piled the debris on to the rickshaw. Shakina was not at home during this operation.
According to her neighbours, when she returned and saw that her hut was being demolished, she collapsed and died. The Hospicio later declared the cause of death as cardiac arrest.
Asha Hedge, social worker, who had helped her in the past when the same had happened,  alleged that this time the ambulance too was reluctant to take her and said that they needed her family members’ assistance.
The police, too, she alleged refused to take action. However, the police inspector of Margao C L Patil said while Shakina’s hut was being demolished, he had warned the alleged accused to rebuild it soon and he had reportedly agreed to it, but the victim died out of shock.
