10.5% of State’s youngsters in age group of 15 and above are jobless which is far higher than the national average of 4.2%, minister Teli informs Rajya Sabha in a written reply to MP Luizinho Faleiro

MARGAO:  Yes, we have this. The unemployment rate in Goa for all age groups (15 years and above) is 10.5 per cent which is far higher than the national average of 4.2 per cent. As confirmed by data from the highest platform in the land. The Parliament of India.

For the 15-29, age group unemployment rate in Goa is 25.8 per cent as compared to the national average of 12.9 per cent. Similarly, for the 15- 59 age group, the unemployment rate in the State is 11.1% compared to the national average of 4.6%.

Rameswar Teli presented the above information before the Rajya Sabha.

In a written reply to MP Luizinho Faleiro, Minister of State for Labour and Employment (MoS), Rameswar Teli presented the above information before the Rajya Sabha. The data on Employment and Unemployment has been collected through the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MOSPI).

In the 15-29 years age group Goa’s unemployment rate was more than double the national average between 15-59 years, it’s almost three times more.

The MoS stated that employment was generated and sought to be generated under Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM).

“The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship is implementing the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) for skill-based training of the youth across the country.  The Minister said besides employment opportunities in India’s flagship programmes.

He listed the various moves to resolve the unemployment problem in the State.

“Model Career Centre (MCC) under Regional Employment Exchange Panjim has been conducting various outreach activities online as well as offline training programmes. Besides the above, the Government of Goa has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with 47 industry partners over a period of the last 2 years for setting up of Skill Development Centre, training the trainers, internship, apprenticeship of trainees and placement support from industry,” Teli concluded.

The ‘old man’ still fires and keeps Goa resonating in Parliament

Rajya Sabha MP Luizinho Faleiro continues to raise Goa’s issue either through zero-hour mentions or through questions to which eye-opening statistics and data are being revealed. The shameful figures of Goa’s unemployment scenario would have pained the former Chief Minister who first introduced a detailed employment policy during his tenure. In his speeches in this session, he batted for Goan fishermen and seafarers.

His question on the Illegal constriction in Goa heritage precincts, made the voice of Goa resonate in parliament.

But then this “old man” with his dynamism and energy has done more for Goa in his short time in Parliament that many haven’t done for decades. It’s a leadership template that is still shining.

The date on unemployment that Faleiro’s question brought, has opened up Pandora’s box of the serious unemployment problem that has hit Goa and laid bare the hollowness of claims that opportunities and jobs are plenty in Goa. Figures given in parliament never lie.
