Shortly, CCP to bring in more areas in city under pay parking

PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) is gearing up to bring in more areas of the Panjim city under pay parking jurisdiction, shortly.

On February 15, CCP had launched first phase of pay parking along nine stretches.

Addressing media persons on Wednesday, CCP Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues said that with implementation of pay parking, traffic management has been put in place. “The traffic flow has been smoothened and one can seek systematic parking of vehicles. Traffic police even reviewed the situation and appreciated it,” he said.

Rodrigues said that the Corporation has identified 25-30 additional parking spaces, which were permanently occupied by tourist taxis and other abandoned vehicles.

“Looking at people’s response and positive outcome, we are considering implementing second phase of pay parking, covering more areas, shortly,” the Commissioner said.

Responding to a question, Rodrigues said that the residents, who can prove themselves as locals, are waived off from payment of parking fees. “So far everything is going smoothly. There are no complaints from even residents,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mayor Uday Madkaikar clarified on social media post the “differences” in parking fees for four-wheelers.

“Someone is purposely trying to misguide public through an old notification. The revised rates were notified by Collector and only after that tender was issued,” Madkaikar said urging people not to fall prey to misinformation.

The notification issued by then District Magistrate R Menaka approved Rs 20 for four-wheelers upto 4 hours and Rs 15 every extra hour or part of it. However, the boards displaying parking fees state that four-wheelers have to pay Rs 20 for one hour and Rs 15 every additional hour.
