Show cause notice to Margao hotels for disposing waste into agri field

MMC CO warns to refer the matter to health officer and AE for disconnection of water supply

MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday issued show cause notices to the hotels and restaurants with regard to disposing of waste water through the drainage and garbage from residential complex into agricultural fields around Salpem Lake. 

Agnelo Fernandes, Chief Officer, MMC said it has been brought to his notice by the farmers of Ratwado, Navelim about the waste water releasing into the fields. 

“During inspection by the sanitary inspector of this council it is found that the restaurant known as AL Civil Restaurant is discharging sewage water in the nullah of storm water drain, which flows further, and lead to pollute farming field and Salem lake at Navelim,” said Fernandes. 

He further said that there is flow and stagnation of the dirty waste sewage, which emits foul smell and has created pollution, besides environmental hazard in the nearby fields of Navelim. 

“There in exercise of the powers vested under section 197 and 224 of the Goa Municipalities Act 1968, and the rules made there under, and under section 41 of the Goa Public Health Act, 1985, hereby direct to show cause so as to why a penalty of Rs 5000 should not be imposed on account of releasing sewage water into the fields, and Salpem lake at Navelim,” reads the notice. 

CO has also warned to refer the matter to health officer and assistant engineer for the disconnecting the water connection, so as to avoid nuisance, and health hazard in the locality.
