VASCO: The brief pre-monsoon showers on Wednesday night served as an unpleasant curtain-raiser to what’s in store during the monsoon in Vasco. Apart from the routine water-logging, the drains were choked with garbage and overflowing with sewage.
The worst-affected areas were Vaddem, Khariwado and Mangoor Hill; beside reports of water logging, the residents had to face a flood-like situation after rainwater from hilly areas gushed into their houses.
A tree at Swatantra Path near the police quarters also fell on electricity conductors and then on the road, forcing the residents to spend the night in darkness. Similarly, an Akasi tree fell on the road near Mundvel, Vasco. However, Vasco fire officials managed to clear the road by cutting the tree and debris on war footing.
The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) had claimed that it had taken up pre-monsoon works in its jurisdiction. But the pre-monsoon showers that led to the drains on the main roads and internal roads getting flooded have exposed the truth behind the MMC claims. This has irked the citizens of Vasco, who have demanded an explanation from the MMC on why such works were not given due importance.
