VASCO: A solid waste dumping site of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) at Headland Sada seems to have a new lease of life. Earlier, birds and stray dogs multiplied and chose tp inhabit the area; now shrubs are visible over the huge garbage dump.
The garbage dumping site at the Sada has now developed into a mini plant nursery, wherein hundreds plant shrubs have cropped up over the waste dump. Few days ago, people were surprised to see such shrubs growing over the waste dumps of Sonsoddo in Margao. The situation at Sada is not much different
Due to the game of musical chair, MMC has failed to tackle the garbage issue.
The current situation at the solid waste dumping site is worrisome due to the increasing size of the dump, which caused the compound walls to collapse, following which, the solid waste has spilled on the roads making it unmotorable.
MMC Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar said that he inspected the solid waste dump site on Monday. “A five-tonne bio-digestor is operational at the site and the second bio-digestor is likely to be operational by next week. We have also asked for third bio-digestor,” he said.
“People are giving us mixed garbage adding to the work of segregation. We have decided to impose fine on such people in near future especially on the Commercial establishments, to start with,” he added.
